The "Auld Mug" Shines Again
Posted by gt0081a on August 17, 2010

To be honest, I only watched a handful of random videos due to an all-too-slow internet connection but there is no doubt in my mind that the RC44 footage sailed several boat lengths ahead of the X40 media.  Even though I knew the tests were fairly controlled, there were plenty of "baited breath" moments watching the monohull video due to the combination of intense grinding, quickly shifting crew, heeling, bow wave - everthing!  This "WOW" factor (in my opinion) is what will draw a broader audience on television/cable/satellite/internet/smart phone/etc.

As a bonus, I really love the media-driven approach that BMW Oracle is taking with the 34th AC coupled with bring AC racing back to its roots.  Offering a state-of-the-art presentation to include unedited audio from the helm, multiple angles, and 3D video off the bow sprit would contrast very nicely with the age-old visage of sailors hiking out off the rail trying to squeeze out every inch of advantage as heeling sloops in the oldest dual in sport approach the windward mark.  The multihulls did not seem to provide that same contrast of tradition with technology.

I can't wait to watch!

Sincerely,

David S.
