Better Platform
Posted by jaknig on July 29, 2010

Thanks for doing such a great job televising the last cup.  It was clearly tough to maintain the tension in such a lopsided contest.

The next one should be much closer racing.  I feel that the monohull is a better platform for your cameras.  These boats are relatively stable, dry and have some freedom of movement for a roaming camera.

The multihull shots were wet, confused and lacked the context of actually seeing the other boat in the frame.

Bottom line, monohulls are best for the closest racing.  I'll leave it to you to come up with a fast design that really shines in  most conditions!  We'll miss the bursts of raw speed from a multi, but love the close in drama that most match racing delivers on monohulls.

Thanks,

jaknig

If one of the elements of compelling TV viewing is the human element, how about a monohull (60'+) with half the crew out on a trapeze? Look at the boats that sail in the Centomiglia regatta in Italy.

Loose the accent

Please use announcers and commentators who speak without that annoying British or New Zealand accent...... maybe someone who speaks American? Mono-hulls and close racing with some aerial viewing would be most appreciated too.

I was lucky be on the water in Perth and San Diego in media chase boats and syndicate boats with lots of viewing screens. Except for the blowout in the Cup itself, Perth was the best. Boat size matters to the cameras only up to a point. The twelves gave us the best match racing from a well developed design rule and class, that was relatively affordable. Go mono! How you translate the Aussie vibe to San Francisco I don't know, but I will be there to find out!
